Notes on Nomenclature
Killeen & Turner (2009) use Nuculanidae instead of Yoldiidae in agreement with Ockelmann & Warén (1998) who explan that the distinguishing characters between these two families has never been well documented. Until the Yoldiidae can be clearly distinguished from the Nuculanidae we shall treat them under the single family Nuculanidae.

To 15 mm.
Shell Structure:
Rather thin, brittle.
Equivalve:
Equivalve.
Equilateral:
Inequilateral, beaks just in front of midline.
Tumidity:
Moderate.
Outline:
Sub-elliptical, posterior subrostrate; dorsal margins immediately adjacent to umbos slightly sunken; anterior broadly curved; ventral gently curved; posterior dorsal margin sloping, straight; posterior pointed; posterior ventral slightly concave.
Contour:
Umbos prominent; posterior set off by a rounded ridge running from beaks to posterior margin, a radial sulcus ventral to the ridge. Edge of escutcheon raised.
Sculpture:
Smooth with faint concentric line and growth stops.
Margin:
Inner margin smooth.
Ligament:
Internal set on a triangular resilifer that projects into the umbonal cavity.
Hinge:
Taxodont of numerous pointed teeth.
Periostracum:
Persistent, rather shiny, olive brown to golden brown in colour.
Colour:
Shell white.
