Yoldiella jeffreysi (Hidalgo, 1877)
Nuculanoidea : Nuculanidae
Slightly inequilateral, beaks just in front of midline.
Rounded oval: postero-dorsal and antero-dorsal margins gently sloping; posterior and anterior margins broadly rounded; ventral margin deeply rounded with the lowest point slightly posterior to the midline. Umbo prominent, moderately broad, projecting just above the dorsal margin, anterior of the midline.
Sculpture: Smooth. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Amphidetic, attached internally to the underside of the beak without a projecting chondrophore or resilifer. Relatively short. Hinge: Hinge plate long, narrow, with 8-10 posterior and 7-9 anterior, pointed, chevron-shaped teeth on either side of the umbo. Pallial Musculature: Posterior adductor muscle scar elongate-rounded. Periostracum: Silky, pale straw coloured. Colour: Translucent white. Additional Characters: The hind-gut lies on the right side of the body and forms a complex series of clockwise and anticlockwise coils.
Distribution & Ecology
Found in most of the Atlantic deep-sea basins, including many locations in the Western European Basin, especially Rockall Trough from latitudes of 44°N to 58°N, and at depths of 2040-4862m. Also recorded from western Greenland, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean off Palermo.
