Notes on Nomenclature
Here previously as Paliolum furtivum (Lovén, 1846).
To size: To 20mm. Shell Structure: Thin, fragile. Equivalve: Valves equally convex. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Subcircular to suboval, a little higher than long (umbonal angle ca. 95°). Anterior ears ca. 3x longer than posterior, posterior ears distinct. Contour: RV anterior ear with a deep byssal notch. ctenolium well developed.
Sculpture: Both valves with antimarginal micro-sculpture only. RV anterior ear with 4-6 riblets. Margin: Inner margin smooth. Colour: Variable patterned or plain, white through yellows, to reds to brownish purple.
Distribution & Ecology
Restricted to the west coasts of Britain and Ireland from the Channel Islands to Shetland. Lives offshore from the sublittoral to the shelf edge.

Dijkstra & Gofas 2004, Dijkstra & Goud 2002 regard P. furtivum Lovén to be a junior synonym of incomparabile Risso 1826. CLEMAM regards these as separate species and we retain the Lovén name which was erected for Norwegian material.
