To size: To 10 mm. Shell Structure: Fragile, semi-transparent. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Equilateral. Tumidity: Both valves weakly convex. Outline: Disc subcircular, slightly longer than high. Anterior ears slightly longer than posterior ears and more demarcated from disc. Byssal notch small, ctenolium absent.

Sculpture: Both valves smooth except for weak and sparse anastomosing raised radial lines over umbonal area of LV. Colour: White, semitransparent.

Distribution & Ecology

Recorded from west and southwest Iceland to the Bay of Biscay from the outer shelf and bathyal depths to 1400m. It is likely that this species is found along the entire continental margin and upper slope north to the Wyville-Thomson Ridge.

Key Features & Similar Species

Very similar to S. similis but that species has no microsculpture on either valve and is frequently patterned. S. greenlandicus has much stronger sculpture, reaches a greater size and is restricted to arctic and subarctic waters.
