Notes on Nomenclature

Here previously as Loripes lacteus.

To size: To 22mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Almost equilateral, beaks slightly to anterior. Tumidity: Tumid. Outline: Circular, broadly rounded posterior dorsal margin, anterior concave. Contour: deeply set, short lunule.

Sculpture: Concentric lines and very fine radiating lines. Growth stages clear. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Deeply inset and more than a third the length of the posterior dorsal margin and about 30° angle to posterior margin. Hinge: Two cardinals in each valve, in RV posterior bifid, in LV anterior bifid. Single anterior and posterior laterals in both valves. Pallial Musculature: Pallial line continuous. Anterior adductor much more elongate and narrower than posterior. Periostracum: Very thin, beige. Colour: White, sometimes tinged yellow.

Distribution & Ecology

In sand from low in the intertidal to about 20m in sheltered settings.
A southern species on the coasts of the English Channel north to the Solway and on all coasts of Ireland.
