To size: To 64mm. Shell Structure: Solid, but thin shelled. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Beaks in front of midline. Tumidity: Not tumid. Outline: Elongate ovate/cyclindrical. Dip in ventral margin giving a kidney-like outline to shell. Contour: Posterior and anterior gape.

Sculpture: Concentric lines and ridges. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Ligament prominent, dark-brown arch-shaped, extending a quarter of the way to posterior margin. Hinge: 2 cardinals in RV, posterior larger than anterior, 1 in LV, grow from beneath the umbo like hooks. No laterals. Pallial Musculature: Pallial sinus deep, extending to beneath umbones and is confluent with pallial line for half its length. Periostracum: Thick, rough, dark brown or greenish yellow. Colour: White or fawn.

Distribution & Ecology

Recorded all along the western seaboard. Records from northern Scotland and northern Isles require confirmation. Lives in range of subtidal substrates from sand to gravel but usually always with a muddy component. Probably rare beyond 100m depth. Thick solid, black mud, muddy sand, muddy gravel.
