Notes on Nomenclature

Not included in CLEMAM – deep-water species

To size: To 3.5mm. Shell Structure: Thin, semi-transparent. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Equilateral, beaks located at, or slightly anterior of midline. Tumidity: Slightly inflated. Outline: Oval with a pointed rostrum: antero-dorsal margin short, sloping to narrowly rounded anterior. Postero-dorsal margin long, almost horizontal, distinctly angled with upper margin of rostrum; junction of rostrum with ventral margin sinuous; ventral margin deeply rounded. Umbo relatively narrow, just rising above the dorsal margin. Contour: Rostrum with a sharp keel.

Sculpture: Of closely spaced but rather obscure co-marginal ridges and lines. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Amphidetic, internal part, rounded and relatively large, and seated in a resilium but without a projecting chondrophore; external part small, scarcely visible and not visible from a lateral view. Hinge: Taxodont. Hinge plate moderately solid, v-shaped, narrow near the umbo and broadening towards either end. Teeth chevron-shaped, up to 11 in each set. Periostracum: Glossy, iridescent, translucent pale olive. Colour: Transparent, glassy. Additional Characters: Gut loop of multiple, tight, circular coils on anterior right side.

In our study area known only from the Porcupine Sea Bight at bathyal and upper abyssal depths

Additional Information & Related Species

Additional Comments

Genus Spinula Dall, 1908 is a junior homonym of Spinula Herrich-Shaefer, 1856 and hence the subfamily Spinulinae designated by Allen & Sanders, 1982 is replaced by Bathyspinulinae Coan & Scott, 1997. CLEMAM has elevated the subfamily to family level, which we have chosen to follow.
