Remarks
In Melvill’s 1917 note he expresses that he is almost certain this shell was from the Norris collection and not from Florida at all. On returning from nearly a year in the United States between 1872-3 he purchased many lots from the Norris collection sale and sent specimens from both this and from the United States to Sowerby 3rd. He does not recall collecting this specimen from Florida and thinks it was confused with the United States specimens when sent to Sowerby together with those from Norris’ collection.
On receiving the type of C. pusio Sowerby 1st, 1834, Sowerby 3rd described it as C. melvilli in error. The earlier name would have priority but happened to be preoccupied by Conus pusio Hwass in Bruguière, 1792. Thus C. melvilli is effectively, if not intentionally, a nomen substitutum for C. pusio Sowerby 1st, 1834. This specimen represents the holotype of both taxa, which are objective synonyms.
