Notes on Nomenclature

Here previously as Verticordia acuticostata.

To size: To 10mm. Shell Structure: Heavy. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks coiled, close to the anterior margin. Tumidity: Inflated. Outline: Subcircular, posterior dorsal margin long curving steeply; other margins a continuous curve indented by the radial ribs. Contour: Lunule area deep below coiled beaks.

Sculpture: Sculpture of 13-16 acute, carinate, ribs; sides of ribs and interspaces with fine radial rows of granules. Margin: Inner margin digitate, interlocking. Ligament: Internal, small with lithodesma. Hinge: RV with a projecting cardinal boss; LV with a smaller thickening. Pallial Musculature: Obscure. Periostracum: Obscure. Colour: Dirty white, internal lustrous.

Distribution & Ecology

A bathyal species found widely in the Atlantic but mostly in lower latitudes and recorded here only for the Porcupine sea bank and margins of the Bay of Biscay.
