Notes on Nomenclature

Recently changed to Vertambitus triangularis(Locard, 1898) in WoRMS. CLEMAM synonymise it with Verticordia sinuosa (Jeffreys 1882) but we have been unable to find published verification of the above synonymy. Specimens illustrated here are identical to Verticordia triangularis, whereas V. sinuosa is based on fragments.

To size: To 18mm. Shell Structure: Thin, opaque. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks close to the anterior margin. Tumidity: Compressed. Outline: Rounded trapezoidal; posterior dorsal margin straight; junction with posterior a broad curve; posterior margin long, straight; posterior ventral junction a broad curve merging into gently curved ventral; anterior very small.

Sculpture: Entire surface with dense radial rows of spinules, radial arrangement obscure towards margins. Margin: Inner margin smooth. Ligament: Internal, small with lithodesma. Hinge: RV with a prominent boss-like cardinal. Pallial Musculature: Obscure. Periostracum: Obscure. Colour: Dirty white.

An abyssal species, recorded from scattered localities throughout the Atlantic.
