Morphology
Size
10.0-24.0 µm long, 5.0-6.5 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Valves elliptic with broadly rounded ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, heterovalvar.
Striae
Striae radiate on both valves; areolae sometimes discernible, 24-28 in 10 µm (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow, linear, slightly widening towards central area.
Central area
On raphe valve a large irregular, oval, rectangular or acute-angled sub-fascia occupying more than half the valve width, bordered by several short striae, sometimes central area extends to valve margin; on rapheless valve rounded central area occupying ca. half the valve width.
Raphe
Raphe straight with expanded proximal ends, distal raphe fissures curved in opposite directions.
