Morphology
Shape
Valves elliptic.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, heterovalvar.
Striae
Radiate, fine on the raphe valve, coarse on the rapheless valve, shortened striae can be present throughout on the rapheless valve.
Axial area
Narrow, linear on the raphe valve, wider (variable width) and sometimes irregular on the rapheless valve.
Central area
Acute-angeled sub-fascia on the raphe valve, indistinct on the rapheless valve.
Raphe
Straight with expanded drop-shaped distal ends; proximal ends appear expanded because they are located in a drop-shaped depression, they have small lateral ribs (SEM).
SEM morphology
Uniseriate striae on the raphe valve with round external areola openings. A hyaline area along the valve margin separates the striae on the valve face from a single row of areolae on the shallow valve mantle.
Uni- to biseriate striae on the rapheless valve with irregular-shaped apically extended external areola openings when uniseriate.
Areolae occluded by cribra.
