Morphology
Size
17.4-43.7 µm long, 5.6-8.3 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Dorsal margin convex with two large undulations, the undulations become progressively steeper sided in smaller valves, ventral margin more or less straight, valve ends protracted, rostrate, subcapitate or capitate on the dorsal margin, straight on the ventral margin.
Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar.
Striae
Parallel striae in the valve centre, otherwise radiate, shortened striae can be present at the dorsal undulations.
Raphe
Distal raphe fissures terminate close to the poles.

Ecology
In waters with low pH and conductivity, in Ireland most populations were found in streams and lakes with pH between 4.0-6.5 (Foged 1977). The species can also be found in bogs, ponds, puddles, on rock walls and in soils.
