Morphology
Size
14-105 µm long, 3.5-5.5 µm wide (UK and other populations, Lange-Bertalot et al. 2011).
Shape
Valves arcuate with rounded, slightly tapering ends, rarely slightly inflated; the ends are more acute in smaller valves.
Symmetry
Isopolar.
Striae
Striae parallel (13-17 in 10 µm).
Raphe
Short raphe near the valve ends; terminal fissures bent on the valve face towards the valve centre and visible in LM, proximal raphe ends slightly expanded and located on the mantle.
SEM morphology
Uniseriate striae with round, occluded external areola openings between shallow ribs on the valve surface.
Very short spines can be located along the valve margin.
Several girdle bands, open at the opposite ends of the frustule.
A rimoportula present at one pole, marked by a larger pore on the mantle externally.
