Morphology
Shape
Valves with convex dorsal margin and almost straight ventral margin; ends protracted and rounded; frustules in girdle view rhomboidal or trapeziform and slightly asymmetrical.
Symmetry
Dorsiventral, often heteropolar.
Striae
Striae slightly radiate in the central part of the valve, becoming more radiate at the poles.
Raphe
Short raphe on mantle, short terminal fissures end well short of the poles, giving the ends a 'nose-like' or 'shark face-like' appearance.
