Morphology
Size
12-85 µm long, 3.5-7 µm wide (UK populations).
Shape
Valves narrowly lanceolate, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate with subrostrate to rostrate apices.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Not usually visible in light microscopy, 39-50 in 10 µm (central European populations, Hofmann et al. 2011).
Raphe
Clearly defined fibulate raphe system offset towards one side of the valve, but not at valve margin; fibulae widely spaced and lineate rather than dot-like, irregularly distributed along the raphe canal, the central fibulae not more widely spaced than others.
