Morphology
Shape
Valves cymbelloid with convex dorsal margin, slightly convex ventral margin, and rounded ends.
Symmetry
Dorsiventral.
Striae
Striae parallel dorsally, parallel or slightly radiate ventrally; central dorsal striae wider spaced with one slightly shortened stria, opposite on the ventral side one or two very short striae which hardly extend onto the valve face.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Asymmetrical, rectangular or acute-angled, extending almost to the valve margin on the ventral side, hardly expanded on the dorsal side.
Raphe
Straight with slightly dorsally deflected proximal ends, and distal fissures deflected to the ventral side.
Other features
A single H-shaped chloroplast with a central pyrenoid on the ventral side of the cell.
SEM morphology
External areola openings round, elongate, sometimes doubled, orientated in various directions.
