Morphology
Size
12.7-29.4 µm long, 5.5-6.6 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Valves linear-elliptic with rounded, sometimes slightly protracted poles.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvar.
Striae
On raphe valve striae radiate, on rapheless valve striae weakly radiate in valve centre becoming radiate towards the poles, 20-22 in 10 µm.
Axial area
Narrow axial area.
Central area
On raphe valve wide, stauros-like asymmetrical fascia, on rapheless valve narrow rectangular central area bordered by shortened striae of different length.
Raphe
Raphe straight with expanded teardrop-shaped central ends.
SEM morphology
Striae biseriate, few uniseriate striae can be present adjacent to central area. External areola openings round, aroelae internally occluded by hymenes. Raphe fissures at apices deflected to opposite sides and terminating at valve/mantle junction.
