Morphology

Size
36.5-53.0 µm long, 10-12 µm wide (UK population), 28-105 µm long, 10-18 µm wide (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Shape
Valves rhombic, lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate with cuneate or slightly protracted, subrostrate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Striae parallel and fine, becoming slightly convergent towards valve ends, 29-32 in 10 µm (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Axial area
Narrow, linear.

Central area
Elongate with small constriction.

Raphe
Raphe straight, central and distal ends t-shaped. Internally, longitudinal ribs on both sides of raphe fuse with helictoglossae to form porte-crayons.
