Morphology
Size
27.5-32 µm long, 5-6 µm wide (UK population), 30-50 µm long, 5-6 wide (Lange-Bertalot 1993).
Shape
Valves narrow lanceolate, margins taper gradually from centre to slightly protracted rounded ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Radiate in valve centre, becoming convergent towards apices, 16-17 in 10 µm (UK population), 14-16 (Lange-Bertalot 1993).
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Rounded to rhombic, more or less symmetrical.
Raphe
Raphe filiform with expanded central pores.
SEM morphology
Internally, accessory rib which does not widen in valve centre.
