Morphology
Size
13.5-28.4 µm long, 4.1–5.2 µm wide, length/width ratio 3.3–5.5 (UK population).
Shape
Clavate, narrow lanceolate, often slightly cymbelloid with head pole and/or foot pole often deflected.
Symmetry
Heteropolar.
Valve
Often unequal curvature of valve margins, sometimes almost straight in the central third of valve.
Striae
Slightly radiate, sometimes slightly curved, sometimes parallel at poles, central striae slightly distant from other striae;
4–18 in 10 µm near valve centre, 16–20 in 10 µm near poles.
Axial area
Narrow.
Central area
Small, asymmetrical formed by one short stria and one slightly shortened stria, a round‘stigma’ close to the latter.
Raphe
Slightly undulate with small, drop-like central endings, slightly deflected.
SEM morphology
internal raphe slits terminate centrally in small hooks, striae uniseriate with reniform areola openings
