Morphology

Size
53-64 µm long, 13-14 µm wide (UK population), 40-100 µm long, 10-15 wide (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Shape
Valves linear-lanceolate, margins slightly convex, protracted rostrate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Radiate in valve centre, becoming convergent towards apices, 8-10 in 10 µm (UK population), 8-11 in 10 µm (Lange-Bertalot 2001). Areolae clearly discernible in LM, 27-29 in 10 µm (UK population), c. 24 in 10 µm (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Axial area
Narrow, linear.

Central area
Large rounded, asymmetrical, central area, occupying approximately half of the valve width.

Raphe
Raphe filiform with expanded central pores deflected to the primary side and asymmetrical central nodule.
