Size
9.8-12.4 µm long, 7.4-8.6 µm wide (UK population); 11.5-13.5 µm long, 8,5-9.5 µm wide (Reichardt 1982).
Shape
Valves elliptic with broadly rounded ends.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
On raphe valve striae very fine, radiate, hardly discernible in LM, 35-40 in 10 µm (Lange-Bertalot et al. 2017); on rapheless valve striae radiate, composed of 2-4 round areolae, 11-13 in 10 µm (UK population), 10-12 in 10 µm (Reichardt 1982).
Axial area
On raphe valve narrow linear, on rapheless valve wide lanceolate.

Raphe straight with central pores positioned close to each other.
