Morphology
Size
7.8-17.6 µm long, 4.5-7.3 µm wide (UK population), 10-20 µm long, 5-7.5 µm wide (Lange-Bertalot et al. 2017).
Shape
Valves elliptic-lanceolate with short protracted rostrate to subrostrate ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Striae radiate throughout valve, 14-16 in 10 µm (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow linear on both valves.
Central area
On raphe valve irregular, rounded, transverse rectangular, or one-sided acute-angled fascia, bordered at one or both sides by shortened striae of different length which can be wider spaced, on rapheless valve shallow sinus present on one side.
Raphe
Raphe straight with tear drop-shaped central pores.
