Morphology

Size
30-70 µm long, 6-10 µm wide (UK populations).

Shape
Valves linear to linear-lanceolate with somewhat cuneate, rounded apices.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Slightly radiate, becoming parallel towards the apices and convergent at the apices, 9-12 in 10 µm; two or three shortened striae opposite the central area, sometimes slightly wider spaced.

Axial area
Narrow linear.

Central area
Square to rectangular, extending half or more than half the valve width.

Raphe
Straight, with only very slightly expanded central endings, terminating at the edges of the central area; terminal endings hooked at the apices.
