Morphology

Shape
Valves clavate with rounded head and foot poles, frustules curved in girdle view.

Symmetry
Heteropolar, heterovalvar.

Striae
Parallel, more densely spaced towards the head pole.

Axial area
Narrow, linear, widening slightly towards the valve centre.

Central area
Indistinct or small, elliptic.

Raphe
On the concave valve raphe straight, with straight, expanded proximal ends externally, hooked proximal ends internally, and hooked terminal fissures; on the convex valve short raphe slits at the two poles with expanded proximal ends, distal ends straight or slightly undulating, terminating on the mantle.


SEM morphology
Uniseriate striae with apically elongated or slit-like external areola openings, internal areola openings occluded.

Pore field with large porelli at the foot pole.

Two large pseudo-septa at the head and foot poles.
