Morphology
Size
Length 30-125 µm, width 6-9 µm.
Shape
Valves linear with subcapitate ends, smaller specimens tend towards lanceolate.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, sometimes slightly asymmetrical.
Striae
Numerous transapical ribs, primary and secondary, 7-10 in 10 µm (Williams 1985). Fine striae not visible in LM.
Axial area
Thin sternum difficult to discern in LM.
Other features
Cingulum composed of several open bands.
Colonies are formed by attaching at the poles, a zig-zag structure.
SEM morphology
One rimoportula can be located in different positions across the valve face, but is often close to the valve pole; located between virgae, replacing 4-5 areolae. Two apical pore fields extending from the edge of the valve face onto the mantle. Several small spines on the valve face/mantle junction. Internally primary ribs heavily silicified and extending across entire valve width, secondary ribs raise above internal valve surface towards and at mantle.
