Morphology

Size
50-56 µm long, 9-10 µm wide (UK population), 40-60 µm long, 8.5-10 µm wide (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Shape
Valves elliptic-lanceolate with long protracted rostrate to subcapitate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Striae radiate in central part of valve, becoming parallel away from centre, convergent near valve ends. Striae coarsely lineate, areolae visible in LM.

Axial area
Narrow linear axial area, slightly widening towards valve centre.

Central area
Moderately large rounded central area, approximately half the size of valve width, bordered by 3-4 shortened, often more distantly placed striae.

Raphe
Straight with expanded, drop-like proximal ends, ending within the central area; terminal fissures hooked at apices.
