Morphology
Size
6.0-9.0 µm long, 3.5-4.5 µm wide (UK population); 4.5-17 µm long, 3-6 µm wide (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 2004).
Shape
Valves elliptic-lanceolate, ends broadly rounded, not or very slightly protracted.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, heterovalvar.
Striae
Striae radiate on both valves, 28 in 10 µm (UK population); 24-28 in 10 µm (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 2004).
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Raphe valve with narrow to moderately wide transverse fascia, often slightly wider on one side, sometimes bordered by few very short striae; rapheless valve with narrow to moderately wide fascia on one side, on the opposite side a large area with a horseshoe-shaped depression.
Raphe
Raphe straight with expanded, teardrop-shaped proximal ends.
