Morphology
Shape
Valves linear-lanceolate with gradually tapering margins and rostrate or slightly subcapitate ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Parallel, slightly radiate at the valve ends; positioned opposite each other and off-set.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Rounded, sometimes quadrangular or irregular fascia, ghost striae can be present.
SEM morphology
Uniseriate striae with oval external areola openings which are occluded.
Apical pore fields at both ends.
Small apical spines can be present.
A rimoportula is present at each end.
