Morphology
Shape
Valves elliptical with obtuse point to wide lanceolate.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Axial area
No axial structure, but a line detectable, formed where opposing sets of striae meet during valve development.
Raphe
Raphe system running around valve perimeter, raised very slightly above valve face. Raphe system detectable by presence of fibulae and edges of subraphe canal, which can appear as submarginal line running close to and parallel to perimeter.
Other features
Valve face prominently undulate, homogeneously structured, containing very fine striae that bend in various directions according to their positions relative to undulations.
Chloroplasts highly dissected plates, appearing as network of interconnected angular or lobed segments.
SEM morphology
There can be slight irregular thickenings on the valve face, giving a speckled appearance.
