Morphology
Size
8.0-9.5 µm long, 6.0-7.5 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Valves elliptic with broadly rounded poles.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, heterovalvar.
Striae
On both valves, striae slightly radiate in valve centre, becoming more radiate towards the poles, 24-26 in 10 µm on raphe valve, 22-26 in 10 µm on rapheless valve (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow linear axial area on raphe valve, narrow linear to narrow lanceolate, irregular, on rapheless valve.
Central area
On raphe valve indistinct or small rounded, irregular, bordered by slightly shortened striae on both sides; on rapheless valve absent or slightly widened, irregular, bordered by slightly shortened striae on one or both sides, or indistinct from lanceolate axial area.
Raphe
Straight, slightly expanded proximal ends.
