Morphology
Size
6.5-11 µm long, 4.0-5.0 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Valves elliptic with broadly rounded ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical, heterovalvar.
Striae
Striae radiate on both valves, areolae sometimes discernible; 24-28 in 10 µm (UK population), 22-28 in 10 µm (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 2004).
Axial area
Narrow, linear on raphe valve; lanceolate on rapheless valve.
Central area
On raphe valve small, irregular, rounded, rhombic, transverse elliptic or rectangular; on rapheless valve a wide rhombic or elliptic-rhombic, irregular area formed by axial and central area.
Raphe
Raphe straight with expanded, teardrop-shaped proximal ends.
