Morphology

Size
19-30 µm long, 10-13 wide (English & Potapova 2012).

Shape
Valves ovate, headpole broadly rounded, footpole narrowly rounded to cuneate.

Symmetry
Heteropolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Parallel or slightly radiate in the valve centre, becoming strongly radiate towards the poles, 27-33 in 10 µm (English & Potapova 2012).

Axial area
Very narrow, linear.

Raphe
Raphe slits at the perimeter of the valve, not visible in LM.

Other features
Transapical ribs appear short in LM, raised ribs extending from margin across a quarter of valve width, 6-8(9) fibulae in 10 µm.

SEM morphology
Multiseriate striae with 2-3 rows of areolae towards axial area, 3-4 rows towards valve margin;
areola opening elongate on valve surface, circular on inside of valve;
small silica bars placed irregularly on valve surface between transapical ribs;
externally areolae located on slightly elevated cones in axial area forming an irregular line.
