Morphology
Size
20-50 µm long, 5-7 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Linear, linear-elliptic or elliptic, broadly rounded, subrostrate ends in medium and large-sized valves.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Valve
Prominent transapical ribs (primary and tertiary), 6-9 in 10 µm.
Striae
Very fine, not visible in LM.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Other features
Girdle composed of many bands, open at opposite ends of the frustule.
SEM morphology
Striae uniseriate, equidistant throughout the valve face, parallel and slightly radiate near the apical pore fields .
Internally prominent transapical ribs.
One rimoportula positioned close to the apical pore field.
