Morphology
Size
Length 15-34 µm, width 4.5-5.5 µm (UK population).
Shape
Valves clavate with broadly rounded ends at the head pole and rounded foot pole.
Frustules in girdle view wedge-shaped.
Symmetry
Heteropolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Slightly radiate at the valve centre (12-14 in 10 µm), more radiate near the head and foot poles, sometimes punctate, denser at the head pole; one very short stria on both sides in the valve centre, more widely spaced.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Broad, rectangular or acute-angled, extending to the valve margin, sometimes slightly asymmetrical.
Raphe
Straight with expanded drop-shaped central ends, only slightly undulate distal fissures.
Other features
One isolated stigma near the proximal raphe ends.
In girdle view two dotted lines are clearly visible.
SEM morphology
Pore field at the foot pole with large porelli.
External areola openings round or apically elongate, internally areolae occluded by flaps.
Internal proximal raphe ends deflected unilaterally forming a flattened hook with a circular end.
Pseudosepta present at the poles.
