Morphology
Size
9-18 µm long, 4-5 µm wide.
Shape
Lanceolate with broadly rounded apices, in girdle view rectangular.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Radiate at centre to almost parallel at apices; 2-3 shortened striae at the centre, sometimes one shortened central stria inserted on one side, 16-18 in 10 µm (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow linear.
Central area
Transversely elliptical to slightly angled subfascia, occupying up to half of the valve width.
Raphe
Straight with slightly expanded, widely separated central endings; terminal ends hooked over valve apices.
