Morphology
Shape
Valves linear to linear-elliptic with rounded, rarely slightly subrostrate ends. Frustules in girdle view bent.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvar with concave raphe valve and convex rapheless valve.
Striae
Striae more or less parallel in the central part of the valve, becoming radiate towards the apices, striae denser towards the ends on the raphe valve, almost equidistant throughout on the rapheless valve, striae visible and sometimes punctate in LM.
Axial area
Narrow linear axial area, widening towards the centre on the raphe valve.
Central area
Small rounded or rhombic, or inconspicuous central area on the raphe valve, inconspicuous on the rapheless valve.
Raphe
Straight, filiform raphe with slightly expanded proximal ends and deflected distal ends. Internally proximal ends deflected in opposite directions.
SEM morphology
Areolae occluded by cribra. Some areolae on the raphe and rapheless valve can be doubled.
