Morphology
Size
Length 4-19 µm, width 3-5 µm (central European population, Hofmann et al. 2011).
Symmetry
Valves isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvar with concave raphe valve and convex rapheless valve.
Striae
Striae uniseriate, clearly visible in LM, radiate, wider spaced in the valve centre, particularly on the raphe valve. The central striae can be slightly shortened.
Axial area
Linear, slightly widening towards the valve centre on the raphe and rapheless valve.
Central area
Small rounded or indistinct on the raphe valve, slightly widened or indistinct on the rapheless valve.
Raphe
Simple, filiform and straight, proximal ends slightly expanded.
SEM morphology
Areolae round or oval, and often transapically orientated slits adjacent to the valve margin.
Length 4-19 µm, width 3-5 µm (central European population, Hofmann et al. 2011).
