Morphology
Size
19-29 µm long, 1.8-2.7 µm wide (UK population); 22-38 µm, 2.5-2.8 µm (type population, Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 2004).
Shape
Valves narrow linear-lanceolate with subcapitate or capitate poles; frustules in girdle view bent with reflexed ends.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvar with concave raphe valve and convex rapheless valve.
Striae
Striae slightly radiate, becoming radiate near the poles; 32-38 in 10 µm, wider spaced in the valve centre (UK population); raphe valve 29-33 in 10 µm, rapheless valve 27-30 in 10 µm (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 2004).
Axial area
Narrow linear axial area on the raphe valve, narrow linear on the rapheless valve widening to a narrow lanceolate axial area in the valve centre.
Central area
Small rounded central area on the raphe valve, indistinct on the rapheless valve.
Raphe
Simple, filiform with straight proximal and distal ends.
