Morphology
Size
20.5-31.5 µm long; 5.5-7.0 µm wide (UK population, Pitsford Water), 25-38 µm long, 6-7 µm wide (type population, Loch Leven, see Reichardt 1999), 21-43 µm long, 5.5-7.8 µm wide (European populations, Reichardt 1999, Levkov et al. 2016).
Shape
Valves clavate with rostrate poles, blunt or rounded head pole, rounded foot pole; valve outline sometimes slightly irregular, valve margins can be more or less parallel in the central part of the valve and then taper more abruptly towards the poles than in valves with convex margins which taper more gradually towards the poles.
Symmetry
Heteropolar, bilaterally symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical.
Striae
Slightly radiate in the valve centre, becoming radiate towards the poles, some striae curved, 7-13 in 10 m (UK population), 6-14 (European populations, Reichardt 1999); ‘Janus cells’ (cells with two morphologically distinct valves) present.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Asymmetric, rectangular or slightly acute-angled, with one very short stria on one side, one stigma and a slightly shortened stria on the opposite side.
Raphe
Undulate, expanded proximal ends.
