Morphology

Size
Length 15-35 µm, width 6.6-8.0 µm; ratio of pole width to
maximum width ca.1 : 2.3 (UK populations, Mann et al 2004).

Shape
Valves elliptical with clearly rostrate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Radiate, becoming parallel or, in larger valves, slightly convergent at the poles 1 9.2-23.7 in 10 µm (UK populations, Mann et al 2004).

Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.

Central area
Acute-angled subfascia, ca. 1/2 to 2/3 of the valve width.

Raphe
Simple filiform, straight; external proximal raphe endings expanded, deflected towards the primary side, internally also deflected towards the primary side, terminal fissures are bent towards the secondary side, raphe-sternum not or scarcely
elevated externally (SEM).

Other features
Polar bars perpendicular to apical axis or very slightly reflexed.
