Morphology
Size
Length 17-48 µm, width 6-16 µm (central European population, Hofmann et al. 2011).
Shape
Valves panduriform with a central constriction and broadly rounded, rostrate ends. Frustules in girdle view bent with reflexed ends.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvar with concave raphe valve and convex rapheless valve.
Striae
The uniseriate, punctate striae are radiate from the valve centre, but more strongly radiate near the ends. On the rapheless valve they are more or less parallel at the valve centre.
Axial area
The narrow, linear axial area on the raphe valve is slightly curved. A narrow sternum is located near the margin on the rapheless valve. It can be curved towards the valve centre in the middle part of the valve.
Central area
A broad transverse fascia, which can be asymmetrical, on the raphe valve.
Raphe
Raphe slightly curved with expanded proximal ends.
