Morphology

Size
Length 21.5–53 µm, width 9.5–10.8 µm (UK population, Jahn et al. 2008).

Shape
Valves linear to linear-elliptical, with broadly rounded poles.

Striae
Slightly radiate throughout, more widely spaced but with no intercalated striae at the centre, 19–24 in 10 µm.

Axial area
Axial area narrow, occupying c. 20% of the valve width near the centre, a depressed plain area covered by a narrow conopeum.

Central area
Central area circular to oval in larger specimens (35–45% of the valve width), merging gradually into axial area; raphe-sternum well-defined because of the adjoining depressed area, narrow, expanding into a narrowly elliptical ‘central nodule’ around the proximal raphe endings.

Raphe
Very slightly sinuous.

Other features
Polar bars inconspicuous, more or less parallel.
