Morphology

Shape
Valves linear to linear-rhombic with rounded or cuneate ends, valve margins can be undulate in larger and medium-sized cells.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Uniseriate, radiate, transapically elongated areolae are visible in LM.

Axial area
Variable in width bordered by striae of varying length due to irregularly spaced areolae.

Central area
Circular and variable in size, it can extend to the valve margins.

Raphe
Straight, filiform, proximal endings appear expanded in LM.


SEM morphology
Small protrusions on the virgae.
