Morphology
Shape
Linear, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate with cuneate poles.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Very fine and in LM hardly or not visible.
Raphe
Not visible in LM; the presence of a raphe is detectable in cleaned valves only by the subraphe canal, which (lying as it does beneath the raphe) is located close to the margin, and visible via a longitudinal line running parallel to and close to the valve margin, as in the LM figures presented here; however, the extra parallel line is not always easy to see.
In a frustule, the raphe systems of the two valves lie on opposite sides ('nitzschioid symmetry').
Other features
The fibulae are extended into prominent partitions, appearing in the light microscope as dark bars ('costae') connecting the two margins. These are usually strictly transapical but are occasionally slightly curved or oblique.
