Morphology
Size
Length 78.0-95.0, width 5.0-6.0 µm (UK population); 65-170 µm, 6-7 µm (Jahn & Schmid 2007).
Shape
Linear, tapering near the valve ends to rostrate apices.
Symmetry
Isopolar and ± bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Parallel, 22-24 in 10 µm (UK population), 20-22 in 10 µm (Jahn & Schmid 2007).
Raphe
The raphe is located approximately in the valve centre, fibulae are spaced irregularly, 6-8 in 10 µm (UK population), 6-9 in 10 µm (Jahn & Schmid 2007).
Other features
Motile colonies.
SEM morphology
The raphe is continuous from pole to pole and ends in a t-shaped groove at the apices, internally in a deflected helictoglossa. Striae uniseriate, areolae are occluded by hymenes. A ridge is on one side of the raphe. Small spines can be visible on the valve margin.
