Morphology
Shape
Valves with moderately convex dorsal margin, ventral margin straight or slightly concave, outline in valve view similar to a bean; occasionally, the valve margins are parallel but, more often, the dorsal margin is more arched.
Symmetry
Heteropolar, but isopolar cells can occur, dorsiventral.
Striae
Parallel to slightly radiate, 16-17 in 10 µm (UK population), areolae barely discernible.
Raphe
Raphe mostly located on mantle, short fissures on the valve face terminate close to the ventral margin, at a distance to the apices.
