Morphology
Size
59.0-112.0 long, 8.5-11.5 wide (UK population).
Shape
Linear-lanceolate with weakly inflated centre, broadly rounded head pole, narrowly rounded to cuneate foot pole.
Symmetry
Heteropolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Punctate, weakly radiate, more or less parallel at a distance from valve centre, more strongly radiate at poles; central striae more distantly spaced.
Axial area
Narrow, slightly widening towards valve centre.
Central area
Asymmetric, rectangular on one side, bordered by one short stria, opposite a longer central stria with one stigma at the end.
Raphe
Lateral, external proximal raphe ends slightly dilated, internal proximal raphe ends hooked and clearly visible in LM.
SEM morphology
Striae uniseriate; externally areola opening C-shaped; large pseudosepta present at head and foot pole.
