Morphology
Size
8.5-13 µm long, 1.5-2.1 µm wide (UK population); 7.5-15.0 µm long, 1.5-2.1 µm wide (Van de Vijver et al. 2011); 6.0-19.0 µm long, 1.3-2.0 µm wide (Heudre et al. 2019).
Shape
Valves linear, margins can taper slightly towards broadly rounded ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Striae weakly radiate near valve centre, becoming strongly radiate near valve ends; 32-34 in 10 µm (Van de Vijver et al. 2011, Heudre et al. 2019).
Axial area
Narrow linear, widening towards the valve centre on the rapheless valve.
Central area
Transverse fascia on the raphe valve, small slightly widened, irregular central area on the rapheless valve.
Raphe
Filiform raphe with straight, drop-shaped proximal ends and distal fissures.
SEM morphology
Most striae composed of two areolae, few striae composed of three areolae. Areolae adjacent to the axial area rounded, adjacent to the margins often slit-like, near valve ends rounded.
